Huaraz – Santa Cruz Trek 4d/3n

4 Days / 3 Nights 50 km 3000 msnm – 4750 msnm moderate Huaraz – Cashapampa Vaqueria – Huaraz

Santa Cruz Trek is one of the best treks in Cordillera Blanca. We will hike along Santa Cruz Valley with spectacular views of snow peaks, impressive valleys and lakes and variety of flora and fauna. On the way we will see Apu Alpamayo – once called the most beautiful mountain in the world. We will ascent to the pass of Punta Union (4750m/15580ft) before descending to anther beautiful valley of Huaripampa. This is the most popular trek in the area and there is a good reason for that!

Day 1: Huaraz – Cashapampa – Llamacorral
We will pick you up from your hotel early in the morning. We will drive along de Callejón de Huaylas and beside Santa River. We will pass through Andean towns of Carhuaz, Yungay, finally arriving to Caraz. From here we will take transportation to Cashapampa (3000m). We start our trek here climbing through narrow Santa Cruz Valley on a rocky trail beside a stream. On the way we will enjoy typical Andean high mountain vegetation (paramo) and beautiful mountain views. After steep ascent at the beginning we go up more gently until we reach our campingspot in Llamacorral (3760m). Trekking time of the first day is about five to six hours.

Day 2: Llamacorral – Taullipampa
Today will be a full day of hiking and breathtaking views. After the breakfast we will begin gentle hike by two lagoons of Ichic Cocha and Hatun Cocha. We will see various lagoon birds and puna level vegetation. Then we will pass few waterfalls and continue in the wide valley. We will have lunch in Quishuar, from where we will have beautiful views of the Santa Cruz Valley. After lunch we ascend to our campspot Taullipampa (4200m). From our campspot we will see Apu Alpamayo (5947m) – once found to be the most beautiful mountain in the world. Total hiking time is approximately six hours.

Day 3: Taullipampa – Punta Unión Pass – Paria 

We start our trekking after early breakfast. The trail starts ascending towards Punta Union Pass. As we approach the pass we will see breathtaking Taulliraju glacier that will dominate our trail and beautiful turquoise lagoon of Taullicocha. Then we will continue on the switchbacks up to the Punta Union (4750m/15580ft). On the pass we will enjoy amazing panoramic views down the Santa Cruz Valley to the west, and views of the Huaripampa Valley to the east. Then we will descent passing by the several lagoons to Huaripampa Valley. We will camp in Paria (3800m). Total trekking time is about eight to nine hours.

Day 4: Paria – Vaquería – Llanganuco 
This day we will descend through the Huaripampa valley to Colcabamba village. From there we will have final steep ascend to Vaquería, from where we will take our transportation. On our way we will be passing the Portachuelo pass (4770m/15645ft) and enjoy the spectacular views of Huascaran, Pisco, Huandoy mountains. Then we will continue and pass the lakes of Llanganuco. Afterwards we will continue down to Yungay and to Huaraz.
Trekking time of the fourth day is about three to four hours.

  • The time of hiking will depend on the group. The guide can change the places for having lunch and camping according to the physical condition of the group.
  • Each guide has his own way of leading his groups but always his decisions will be for the benefit of the tourists.
  • SANTA CRUZ: This is an adventure trek. To enjoy it in full – bring an open mind, a positive attitude and a good sense of humor.

  • 1 small nylon reinforced backpack to carry the things you need for the trek (camera, drinks, etc.)
  • 1 large backpack or suitcase to keep the things you don‘t need in your hotel in Cusco until you return from your trek
  • Sleeping bag good for -5°C (which can be rented in Cusco)
  • Small flashlight and extra batteries
  • 1 water bottle (1 liter) or a small plastic throw away bottle
  • Hiking boots
  • Tennis shoes
  • 1 jacket (of nylon with hood and water and wind resistant)
  • 1 Fleece Jacket
  • 1 pair of gloves and hat of wool (they can be bought during your trip)
  • 3 or 4 short sleeved shirts (preferably “dryfit” that don’t retain water)
  • 2 pairs of shorts such as bermudas.
  • Socks: 4 pairs of wool and 4 of fiber (coolmax) for the trek (avoid cotton as these can retain water)
  • 1 sun hat and sunglasses
  • Personal medications and toiletries in small containers
  • Sunscreen for your skin and lips
  • Insect repellent
  • Moisturizer lotion to avoid the drying out of the skin
  • Energy foods according to your needs: chocolates, granola bars, dried fruits, etc. (they can be purchased in Huaraz).


  • Sleeping bags which can be rented in the office for $5 per day and good for – 10°C.
  • Professional walking sticks can be rented in the office for $2 per day
