Three Lodges 4d/3n

4Days / 3 Night 22.5 hours 4000 msnm – 5000 msnm easy – difficult Cusco – Pitumarca Valley Huanpococha – Cusco

Discover the Apu Ausangate – the highest, sacred mountain in the Cusco region – hiking with the comfort of rest in unique high mountain lodges.

The Three Lodges trek will take you to the places with a spectacular views of geological wonders red, ochre, and blue layers and will give you opportunity to view many Andean animals – vicuñas, Andean geese and vizcachas.

This hike is based in lodges where daily meals will be prepared by experienced chefs, introducing you to a great variety of delicious Peruvian cuisine and produce. Some of the nights will include for entertainment, authentic, vernacular music from members of the local communities.

We will pick you up from Cusco in the early morning and go by a private transport along the fertile Vilcanota Valley, all the way to the village of Checacupe. After a visit at the Colonial Church of the Immaculate Conception, we will start ascending the Pitumarca Valley, along the spectacular Japura Gorge that leads to Chillca. We will be greeted there by members of the local community, and from there, it will only be a short and easy walk to the lodge. The total walking time on the first day should be around 1.5 hours. Once at the lodge, there will be time to relax and enjoy the music provided by local community people.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

We are starting the second day early as we expect 8 hours of walking. We pass Ausangate river and reach Astanapata community. On the way we admire beautiful views of the glaciated south face of Ausangate mountain and other smaller snow-capped mountains. We continue towards the red sandstone formations of the Apu to reach our second lodge Anantapata where we spend the night.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

A spectacular part of the trail finds us hiking in the middle of mountains with red, ochre, and blue strata. This section offers a glimpse of marvellous geological wonder and natural beauty. Also, be on the lookout for groups of gracious vicuñas, as they are frequently spotted in this isolated area. After 8 hours of walk we will sleep that night in the Huampococha lodge, in the heart of large rock formations near a lagoon where Andean geese make their nests.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After a last climb over the Anta pass, we will gradually make our descent. In this section the first crops and houses come into view. The landscape changes quickly as the red sandstone formations are followed by the erosion of limestone, forming a one of a kind stone forest, and a perfect habitat for “vizcacha” (members of the chinchilla family). By the time we get down the valley, our bus will be waiting for the return trip to Cusco.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
