Discover the Apu Ausangate – the highest, sacred mountain in the Cusco region – hiking with the comfort of rest in unique high mountain lodges.

This trek program through Palomani Pass will give you an opportunity to enjoy magnificent views of in the Cordillera Vilcanota range including Apu Ausangate. You will pass beautiful mountain lagoons and waterfalls as well as herds of llamas and alpacas.

This hike is based in lodges where daily meals will be prepared by experienced chefs, introducing you to a great variety of delicious Peruvian cuisine and produce. Some of the nights will include for entertainment, authentic, vernacular music from members of the local communities.

 

DAY 1: CUSCO – CHILLCA

We will pick you up from Cusco in the early morning and go by a private transport along the fertile Vilcanota Valley, all the way to the village of Checacupe. After a visit at the Colonial Church of the Immaculate Conception, we will start ascending the Pitumarca Valley, along the spectacular Japura Gorge that leads to Chillca. We will be greeted there by members of the local community, and from there, it will only be a short and easy walk to the lodge. The total walking time on the first day should be around 1.5 hours. Once at the lodge, there will be time to relax and enjoy the music provided by local community people.

DAY 2: CHILLCA – MACHURACAY

On the second day we will start our hike at 8:30 a.m. in the open valley of Upis with impressive views of ice-covered mountains tower high into the sky. The trail becomes narrower, as we make our way towards the waterfalls that come down from Mount Santa Catalina and head towards the small Paloma Lagoon. On the way we can see large amounts of freely wandering lamas as well as large numbers of alpacas. After hiking alongside a second lagoon and crossing a long series of moraines, we will reach the Machuracay Tambo, located right at the foot of Apu Ausangate. The average walking time on the second day is 8 hours.

DAY 3: MACHURACAY – CUSCO

We start the day with a demanding ascent to the Palomani Mountain Pass reaching the highest point of our trek at 5,200 m.a.s.l. Then we will descend to Ausangatecocha lagoon accompanied by fantastic views of the ice-covered south face of Ausangate. We will continue along the red sandstone formations to the community of Ausangate. After 3 hours walking, by the time we get down the valley our bus will be waiting for us to return to Cusco.

  • This is high altitude trek. Previous acclimatisation is necessary.
  • The time of hiking will depend on the group.
  • PALOMANI PASS. This is an adventure trek. To enjoy it in full – bring an open mind, a positive attitude and a good sense of humor.
